What is Spectrum Convergence?
Spectrum Convergence is a Lockheed Martin Product Portfolio focused on ensuring our customers can dominate the full Electromagnetic Spectrum (EMS), bringing capabilities to bear in the realms of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), cyber techniques and effects, electronic warfare (EW), information operations (IO), and 5G.MIL®; while integrating platforms to enable Joint All Domain Operations (JADO).
Ongoing digital transformation is having a dramatic effect throughout the EMS. Adversaries use the EMS to plan and execute their operations while friendly forces look to maintain dominance across the joint, all-domain environment. As a result, the Department of Defense and its allies are increasing their ability to see and control the virtual battlefield thanks to an integration of capabilities from ISR, EW, Cyber, IO, and 5G, but a lot of work remains – that’s where we can help. By converging these technologies, the U.S. military and allies gain an advantage, where digital attacks can cripple enemies in advance of, and in coordination with, strikes across air, land, sea, space and cyberspace.
Lockheed Martin’s Spectrum Convergence team focuses on developing technologies that ensure warfighters stay ahead of EMS and information-based threats.
A New Approach for a New Era of Warfare
Achieving Spectrum Superiority
In the electromagnetic spectrum, Armed Forces face increasingly complex challenges. They must coordinate over dispersed combat zones. Military and civilians’ wireless devices such as cell phones crowd the EMS. Adversaries use the spectrum to plan and execute their operations. And they’ve also applied military and commercial technologies to create new operational advantages.
This environment makes distinguishing friend from foe a daunting task. According to the U.S. 2020 Department of Defense (DoD) Electromagnetic Spectrum Superiority Strategy, the DoD is “challenged to assure and maintain access, use, fires, and maneuver within the electromagnetic spectrum at home and abroad.”
Lockheed Martin’s Spectrum Convergence team understands these threats and are developing advanced technologies to confront them. As part of our 21st Century Security® vision, we’re working to ensure the U.S. military and its allies maintain superiority in the dense electromagnetic spectrum – a critical element of being successful in all-domain operations.
This includes developing adaptable and open architectures for affordable and agile responses to today’s and future threats. We’re also using artificial intelligence technologies and novel technology to resolve spectral chaos for warfighters so they can achieve their mission objectives in contested environments – a key component for optimal joint, all-domain operations.
Understanding Spectral Chaos
Investing in the Fight
To accelerate the development and deployment of 21st Century Security® capabilities required for EMS superiority, we are investing in and partnering with commercial companies to strengthen the defense industrial base and bring cutting-edge defense tech to the modern multi-domain battlespace.
Our 50+ years of experience with multi-domain systems helps us to identify and invest in new technologies that help warfighters effectively manage and operate in the electromagnetic spectrum. Adversaries’ communications and non-communications radio frequency threats are rapidly evolving. This drives the need for affordable solutions that can quickly adapt. Our expert team is making great strides in assisting battlefield commanders in their understanding of the electromagnetic environment, performing command and control, and delivering prioritized, effective and tailored responses.
