New Zealand Frigate Systems Upgrade Project

01 Exporting Canadian Naval Technology and Expertise   ___

Lockheed Martin Canada has initiated a worldwide mandate to pursue international opportunities for mid-life frigate modernizations. The global environment is changing, and we recognize that bringing existing platforms to the 21st century is critical for customers needing to rapidly address emerging threats. Lockheed Martin Canada continues to invest in our workforce and technologies to deliver innovative, cost-effective solutions that address these requirements.

In April 2014, following an extensive worldwide competitive tender, Lockheed Martin Canada was selected over several bidders—including the incumbent—as the Prime Systems Integrator by the New Zealand Ministry of Defence to upgrade the combat systems on their Anzac-class ships.

The New Zealand contract award represents Lockheed Martin Canada’s first export sale of its Canadian developed Combat Management System (CMS), which was designed as a modern, affordable product for the international market. The CMS is the backbone of the technical solution that will integrate the various legacy and new subsystems for the Anzac Class ships.

Our team was able to demonstrate a low risk execution based on real milestones achieved and on-going delivery of the Halifax Class Modernization Project (HCM).

03 Growing Canadian Industry Through Export   ___

As the Prime Systems Integrator, Lockheed Martin Canada leads a strong team, including several Canadian suppliers selected through competition. This offers Canadian companies an opportunity to broaden their portfolios.

Our Canadian suppliers on the Anzac FSU Project include:

  • Seaspan
  • DRS Technologies
  • IBM Canada
  • Infield Scientific

In total, the new capability being delivered for the RNZN could involve from 20 to 30 Canadian suppliers. Lockheed Martin Canada adopts this approach as part of its commitment to deliver enduring economic value for Canada and to our New Zealand customer.

Complex and Diverse Integration Capability

Leveraging its combat system integration methodology and expertise established through Canada's HCM Project, Lockheed Martin Canada exports a highly capable and low-risk solution to New Zealand.

The contract award represents Lockheed Martin Canada's first export sale of its Canadian developed CMS, which was designed as a modern, affordable product for the international market.

System Versatility

The CMS is the backbone of the technical solution that will integrate the various legacy and new subsystems for the Anzac Class ships. Many of the other subsystems to be supplied by Lockheed Martin Canada are common to HCM.

Our open architecture design is a core solution that adapts to a variety of subsystems to ensure delivery meets unique requirements.

The project will provide the ships with excellent systems that will enable them to perform their expected tasks through to the end of their life in the 2030s. We are delighted that Lockheed Martin Canada has been selected as our Prime Systems Integrator after a worldwide competitive tender process. We consider that Lockheed Martin's significant experience from the Canadian Navy's HALIFAX Modernization Programme, will be an important derisking factor in our Frigate Systems Upgrade Project.
